ME (Mechanical Engineering)

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering, its roots going back to the days of Stone Age, when the ancient humans learnt to develop tools for hunting and wheels for locomotion. In the modern era, it is considered one of the broadest core branches of engineering that applies the principles of Physics and Materials Science for the design, manufacturing and analysis of mechanical systems. Mechanical Engineering can be broadly divided into three major categories of specialization – Design, Production and Thermal Engineering. Design, as the name implies, deals primarily with the study and design of various machines and machine parts for optimal operation. Production deals with the various physical properties of materials, manufacturing processes and modern techniques of production. The Thermal specialization is based on the study of heat transfer and associated fluid mechanics for various physical and mechanical systems.

As a student of Mechanical Engineering, one is exposed to a variety of fundamental engineering courses like Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer. More advanced courses in the later stages of the program include Machine Dynamics and Design of Machine Elements, Mechanical Vibrations, Measurement and Control Systems, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and Power Plant Engineering. A Mechanical Engineer can be involved in any one or more of the following areas:

  • Machine design and analysis
  • Thermal systems design
  • Manufacturing systems design
  • Cryogenics & Vacuum technology
  • Industrial engineering & management
  • Metallurgy
  • Energy engineering
  • Ocean engineering
  • Robotics

Employment Opportunities:

In terms of career prospects, students can opt for jobs in PSUs (HAL, NALCO,SAIL,NTPC,NHPC,NPCIL, BEL, ONGC, Reliance, HPCL, IOCL, BPCL, etc.) , and Core companies(Maruti, Tata Motors, Tata Steel ,L&T, Hindustan Motors, Hindalco,Jindal Steels & Power,Bhusan Steel steels & power, HVAC industries etc.), Govt. Sector (Railways, D.R.D.O, ISRO etc) and Software companies (Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture, Mind tree, Capgemini, HCL etc.).
