SiliconTech, the engineering institute of Silicon University, organized the 7th edition of the Model United Nations (SUMUN 2025) from 20-22 March 2025.
The Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations where students play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to find solutions to rising global issues through research, drafting, lobbying, and debating.
The objective of MUN is to help students gain a better understanding of current events, international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations’ agenda. It also helps them develop their skills in public speaking, decision-making, negotiation, situation analysis, and critical thinking.
SUMUN is an annual inter-collegiate conference that gathers students from various institutes across the state to participate as delegates in different UN committees. The event simulates the UN’s procedures, providing a platform for students to engage in discussions on international relations, diplomacy, and global challenges. Through negotiations, debates, and discussions, delegates enhance their communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of current global issues.
The SUMUN 2025 conference featured key committees including the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), World Health Assembly (WHA), and International Press, where delegates tackled complex topics like human rights violations, international security, and mental health.
During the conference, delegates actively participated in drafting resolutions, amending working papers, and engaging in deliberative debates and diplomatic negotiations. The DISEC committee focused on the agenda of ‘Strengthening the Role of Mediation in the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes’, encouraging participants to explore the complexities of international peace and conflict resolution. In the UNHRC session, delegates addressed the human rights violations faced by vulnerable minorities, including women and LGBTQ+ individuals, while advocating for solutions to protect these groups. The WHA session critically examined the effectiveness of the Mental Health Gap Action Program (mhGAP), with participants proposing solutions to improve mental health services in low and middle-income countries.
The conference concluded with the recognition of outstanding delegates in each committee. In DISEC, the Best Delegate award went to Russia, while in WHA, Ireland was recognized as the Best Delegate. The UNHRC awarded Germany as the Best Delegate, with honorable mentions given to various delegates across committees. The International Press Committee also celebrated excellence in journalism and photography with Anish Aniket receiving the High Commendation and Amlan being the Best Journalist.
SUMUN 2025 fostered valuable discussions on global issues and prepared students for future leadership roles in international diplomacy.
