Silicon University (formerly known as Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar), established the Institution Innovation Council (IIC) on 21 November 2018 as per the norms of the Innovation Cell, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
The MHRD established MHRD’s Innovation Cell (MIC) to systematically foster the culture of innovation amongst all higher education institutions (HEIs) in India. The primary mandate of MIC is to encourage, inspire and nurture young students to think of new ideas, concepts, and develop working prototypes.
The Institution Innovation Council (IIC) at Silicon promotes the potential and capacity for innovation and creativity in young people. It encourages youth-led innovation by supporting students in idea development, prototyping, and incubation. It aims to make innovation the primary fulcrum of technical education.
The MHRD, Government of India, recognized Silicon as the best performing Institution Innovation Council (IIC) from the Eastern Zone at the first Annual Innovation Festival on 11th September 2019. The MHRD’s Innovation Cell organized the event in coordination with the AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) at the AICTE Headquarters in New Delhi.
In 2018-19, 952 IICs were established all over the country. Out of these, MHRD felicitated 25 IICs on MIC Foundation Day. Silicon is among the three Institutes from the Eastern Zone and the only Institute from Odisha to receive this recognition.
Silicon is the only institute from Odisha to receive a 5-star rating from the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, for its Institution Innovation Council in 2020.
The Innovation Cell of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, awarded a 5-star rating to Silicon’s Institution Innovation Council on 15 October 2020 for its endeavor to promote innovation and start-up culture on campus. Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, the Union Education Minister, Government of India announced the result at a function organized in New Delhi.
In 2019-20, 1700 IICs were established all over the country. Out of these, MoE awarded a 5-star rating to about 125 institutes. Silicon became the only institute out of seven institutes from the eastern region to get a 5-star rating.
The Institute Innovation Council activities are diverse. Some of them include competitions on essay writing and poster presentations, short video making on innovations, exposure visits for problem identification, sessions by successful entrepreneurs, workshops on design thinking, entrepreneurship development, proof of concept pitching, and funding opportunities for early stage entrepreneurs.
Farmers can benefit from a technological solution that would enable the effective use of resources for cultivation and thereby increase their income. The prototype is of an application that facilitates the colorimetric reaction of various reagents with the soil sample. Sensors detect the color formed during the reaction. The app analyzes the color and displays N, P, K, and pH values on a real-time basis. The app suggests various crops to be grown on the land and the amount of fertilizer needed to make the soil suitable for cultivation.

Water distribution losses are primarily due to leakages in the pipelines. Long-distance transmission and rusting of pipe result in the supply of contaminated water. The model detects the leakage in pipes and checks the contamination level of water at a particular node. The timely detection of leakage will allow quick responses to stop the discharge and proper pipeline maintenance, which will be relevant in reducing loss due to pipeline failures.
