Design and Development of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Based Cardiac Probe for MRI Environment

Researchers at the SiliconTech IoT and Embedded Systems Lab are developing a cardiac monitoring mechanism by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) and Optical Sensors. The Proof of Concept (POC) conveys the possible applications of FBGs in the field of biomedical engineering.

Some of the major design efforts in this project are:

  • The sensor utilizing a Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) as a sensing element was subject to tests carried out both under laboratory conditions, without exposition to the EM field, and during an MRI examination.
  • Methodology for FBG sensor based ballistocardiographic signal recording during an MRI examination and determining its basis physiological parameters such as Heart Rate (HR) and Respiration Rate (RR).
  • Interfacing Ethernet based FBG Interrogator with an auxiliary high computing system for sensor calibration and GUI visualization.
  • The auxiliary system will also communicate with the IoT platform for data storage and DSS. Cloud computing based internet application is the key aspect of the IoT based DSS mechanism.
