The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) Student Chapters at SiliconTech jointly organized a technical talk on ‘Essence of R&D (Research & Development), Intellectual Property & Innovation for Entrepreneurship in HEIs (Higher Education Institutions)’ by Dr. Bijay Kumar Sahu on 8 April 2023.
Dr. Sahu is the Head of the Department of the Technology Innovation Support Centre (TISC) & IP Facilitation Centre (IPFC), National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), Government of India.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are the rights given to people for the creations of their minds. They usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use of his/her creation for a certain period. The objective of this talk was to create awareness about the primary function of IPR, understand the importance of IPR in innovation and new product development, realize the vitality of IPR for the success of R&D, and learn the objectives of IPR in India.
The session began with the welcome address delivered by Dr. Saroj Kanta Misra, our Director, and was followed by a discussion of the objectives by Dr Jayashree Das, Dean Research. Dr. Pratap Ranjan Mohanty, Faculty-In-Charge, IEEE Student Chapter introduced the resource person, Dr. Bijay Kumar Sahu and shared the significant achievements made by him in the fields of IPR and R&D.
Dr. Sahu started the talk by discussing the functions of IPRs. He then shared the objectives of IPR in India and explained why IPR is essential in research, development, and innovation. He cited the examples of several start-up initiatives undertaken by the people of Odisha to emphasize the role of IPR in start-ups. In his concluding remarks, he encouraged the participants to develop patents, copyrights, and trademarks for their research work and start-up ideas.
Our Principal Dr. Jaideep Talukdar felicitated the speaker and appreciated his valuable insights on the topic. The session concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Monorama Swain, Faculty-In-Charge, ISTE Student Chapter. A total of forty three students, research scholars and faculty members attended the talk.
