The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) student chapter at SiliconTech, the engineering institute of Silicon University, celebrated IEEE Day on 4 October 2024.
IEEE Day marks the anniversary of IEEE’s historic 1884 gathering, where members worldwide first united to share groundbreaking technical ideas. This annual event honours IEEE members’ remarkable efforts in driving innovations that harness technology for a sustainable, brighter future. Focusing on advancements like intelligent transportation systems, IEEE Day highlights the organization’s profound impact on society—from the internet’s inception to autonomous vehicles—showcasing the power of global unity in shaping technology’s future.
The objective of the IEEE Day celebration at SiliconTech was to equip participants with valuable industrial skills and knowledge through a balanced approach of theoretical insights and practical, hands-on learning experiences.
The IEEE Day program at SiliconTech included three events- two social outreach activities and a technical talk. Shri Hare Krushna Rath, Chair of IEEE Bhubaneswar Sub-Section and Former Director of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Chandipur, was the Guest of Honour.
The outreach initiatives included a plantation drive. Shri Ratha actively participated in the plantation drive and highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability.
The other outreach activity included Shri Ratha inaugurating the logo and QR code for ‘HE(ART) of Donating’, an initiative by the IEEE Student Chapter at SiliconTech to connect individuals willing to donate blood to needy patients. Additionally, the platform maintains a database of volunteers (blood donors) that includes their names, blood groups, and locations. Whenever a request for blood from a patient is received (through email, WhatsApp group, phone call, etc.), the responsible official quickly connects the patient with available donors in the area based on the required blood group.
The day concluded with an enlightening talk by Shri Ratha on the topic, ‘Role of ITR, Chandipur, DRDO in the Indian Defence Landscape’. Shri Ratha provided a comprehensive overview of the ITR as a premier facility for missile system testing in India, detailing its establishment, state-of-the-art facilities, and vital contributions to the DRDO. The talk underscored ITR’s role in advancing indigenous defence technologies, supporting India’s goal of self-reliance in defence, and highlighting the importance of international collaborations for technology exchange. Shri Ratha also addressed the operational challenges faced by ITR and emphasized the significance of public awareness in defence initiatives. The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A segment, fostering active audience engagement, and providing insights into ITR’s critical role in strengthening India’s defence capabilities and driving technological innovation.
A total of one hundred and thirty students and faculty members enthusiastically participated in the event.
