SiliconTech, the engineering institute of Silicon University, collaborated with inDNA Life Sciences Pvt Ltd to celebrate World DNA Day on 25 April 2024.
The molecule that contains the genetic information necessary for an organism’s growth and operation is called deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. In honor of the completion of the Human Genome Project and the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, the United States observed DNA Day for the first time on April 25, 2003. Since then, April 25 has been observed annually as World DNA Day to honor the discovery, comprehension, and advancements in science around DNA.
The objective of the event was to raise awareness of the potential applications of genetics in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention—a process that will extend the human life span and enhance the quality of life.
The event began with the welcome address delivered by Dr. Jaideep Talukdar, our Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Biren Banerjee, Professor and Head of the JBS Haldane Center at SiliconTech & Founder and Director of inDNA Life Science Pvt Ltd, delivered an expert talk on the occasion. He traced the development of DNA structure to its modern use in precision medicine, specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Professor Sridhar Sivasubbu from Vishwanath Cancer Care, Bangalore inspired the audience by sharing his incredible journey in the field of genome sciences. He spoke about the vital role played by DNA-based research in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of illnesses, including microbial infections, neurological problems, and genetic abnormalities.
Dr. Nibedita Jana, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), advocated exploring the intersection of invention, creativity, and entrepreneurship, particularly within the realm of DNA-related discoveries. She encouraged students to delve into the intricate complexities of DNA, viewing it not merely as a biological blueprint, but as a source of limitless possibilities.
Dr. Ramray Bhat, Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, delved into the complex interactions between the extracellular matrix and the development of cancer in his talk, shedding light on potential therapeutic avenues.
Dr. Divya Sriram, an adjunct professor at the JBS Haldane Center, delivered an insightful presentation on entrepreneurial opportunities in DNA-based healthcare technologies. Her expertise and guidance inspired the audience to explore and innovate within this transformative field.
The event attracted over sixty enthusiastic participants from various districts of Odisha, all with backgrounds in life sciences. A few selected students shared innovative concepts on the potential of DNA research to revolutionize lifestyle choices. Additionally, an engaging poster session was arranged to further interact and explore emerging themes in the field.
After the morning session concluded, participants reconvened at the Crystal Crown Hotel for an engaging evening session. Distinguished medical professionals from across Odisha convened to explore DNA-based methods for cancer monitoring and detection, including NGS and Microarray techniques. The focus was on uncovering novel opportunities for advancing cancer treatment. The day concluded with a shared dedication to fostering cooperation and creativity in the realm of DNA research.
