The Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities (BSH) at Silicon Institute of Technology, Sambalpur (Silicon West) organized a two-day event from 21 to 22 December 2023 to celebrate National Mathematics Day.
The objective of the event was to commemorate the birth anniversary of the eminent mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and raise awareness about the importance of mathematics in our daily lives.
On the first day of the event, a quiz competition was held in which seventy students from the first year of B.Tech. participated. Five teams consisting of fifteen students were selected for the final round. Among them, Asmit Singh, Subhranshu Kabi, and Rashmi Ranjan Sahoo emerged as the winners of the competition. The runners-up were Oshan Khati, Sonu Kumar Ray, and Ashish Singh. In the technical session held on the first day, five students from the third year B.Tech. including Saswat Ranjan Pattanaik, Gourav Ranjan, Somdev Behera, Priyabrata Mishra, and Chiranjeeb Das presented their papers.
The second day started with a floral tribute paid to Srinivasa Ramanujan by Dr. Mihir Hota, Dean Academics, Silicon West, and Dr. S. K. Paikray, Professor of Mathematics, Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla. Dr. S.K. Paikray delivered a talk on Ramanujan’s life and his significant contributions to the world of mathematics. The second day included another technical session in which five students from the second year B.Tech. including Shinku Kumar, Adarsh Kumar, Punam Agrawal, Rubi Kumari, and Debasish Patra presented their papers.
The winners and runners-up of the quiz competition were awarded prizes in the valedictory session. The paper presenters were also awarded certificates of participation to encourage their academic interest in mathematics.
Dr. Chinmayee Padhy, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Silicon West, convened the event. The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Padhy.
