SiliconTech organizes a Faculty Development Program on ‘Mathematical Concepts and Building Blocks for Simulation’

The Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities (BSH) at SiliconTech organized a Faculty Development Program (FDP) on ‘Mathematical Concepts and Building Blocks for Simulation’ in two phases from 7 to 23 August 2023. The first phase of the FDP was held from 7 to 11 August 2023 and the second phase was conducted from 21 to 23 August 2023.

The objective of the FDP was to provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamental mathematical concepts and tools essential for designing, implementing, and analyzing simulations in various fields.

The FDP was conducted by Dr. Saroj Kanta Misra, our Director. Dr. Misra is a Professor of Mathematics and an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur. His research interests include projective geometry and finite geometries.

The FDP covered essential concepts related to random numbers, their generation, and their association with various probability distributions. Participants learned various methods for generating random numbers corresponding to different probability distributions, including techniques like the inverse transform method and the acceptance-rejection method. Additionally, the program provided insights into strategies for minimizing variance during the random number generation process, such as employing antithetic variables, leveraging control variates, applying conditioning, and implementing stratified sampling, among others.

A total of eleven faculty members from different departments of SiliconTech participated in the FDP. The interactive sessions equipped the participants with a solid foundation in statistical simulation, enabling them to effectively model and analyze complex systems.
