Silicon West organizes a one-day workshop on Applied Science in Higher Education

Silicon Institute of Technology, Sambalpur (Silicon West) organised a one-day workshop titled ‘An Interdisciplinary Approach to Applied Science in Higher Education’ on 17 January 2026.

The objective of the workshop was to emphasize the importance of interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinary among basic sciences, encourage the application of scientific principles in engineering and higher education, and align teaching–learning practices with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 through integrated classroom and research approaches.

The workshop was convened by Dr. Mihir Hota, Professor of Physics and Dean Academics, Silicon West, who delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Ramaprasad Panda, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Dean Student Affairs, Silicon University Odisha, Bhubaneswar, shared insights on addressing classroom challenges by linking basic and applied sciences.

Prof. (Dr.) Karuna Kar Nanda, Director, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, graced the program as the Chief Guest and highlighted the need for interdisciplinary perspectives in research and classroom teaching. Dr. Sushant Kumar Paikray, Professor of Mathematics, Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, and Dr. Prabhat Kumar Sahu, Professor of Chemistry, Sambalpur University, contributed as resource persons, deliberating on applications of Mathematics in Engineering and the interlinked nature of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in science education. Teachers of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from higher secondary schools and degree colleges in and around Sambalpur and Bargarh districts participated, along with doctoral research scholars from VSSUT, Burla.

The program was compered by Dr. Sonalika Mishra, coordinated by Dr. Ashutosh Rath, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Chinmayee Padhy.
