Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar to be upgraded to ‘Silicon University’, a self-financed private, non-affiliating unitary University

Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (SiliconTech) is to be upgraded to ‘Silicon University’. In a historical move, the Odisha cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik approved the enactment of the Silicon University, Odisha Bill to upgrade Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar into a self-financed private, non-affiliating unitary University on 15 September 2023.

Silicon University’s primary mission will be to disseminate knowledge by offering cutting-edge academic and research facilities in the fields of engineering and technology as per the norms and standards of courses or programs prescribed by different regulatory bodies. The University will play a pivotal role as a center for fostering cooperation between academics, research, and industry.

Furthermore, Silicon University will actively identify and establish long-term partnerships with industrial sectors and individual companies through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). These collaborations will create valuable opportunities for both faculty members and students to engage in real-life problem-solving and secure sponsorships. Additionally, the university will offer support to enhance the employability of its graduates by providing training in entrepreneurship and specialized soft skills required by industries.

Elevating the college to “University” status will additionally open doors for sharing experiences and engaging in collaborative endeavors for advanced education and research with other Universities within the state, across the country, and even internationally.

Established in 2001, the Silicon Institute of Technology in Bhubaneswar has consistently been at the forefront of engineering education. In a significant development during the academic session of 2018-19, the University Grants Commission (UGC) conferred the institute with autonomy status for a period of 10 years. Now, in 2023, the state cabinet has approved the institute to function as a full-fledged University.

The Cabinet’s decision coincides with the celebration of National Engineer’s Day. The convergence of these events is symbolic and speaks volumes about the paramount importance of engineering education and innovation in our society.

This monumental step not only acknowledges the institute’s dedication to excellence but also highlights the critical role engineers play in shaping our future. It reinforces our commitment to fostering a culture of innovation, research, and development that will undoubtedly contribute to the progress of our nation.

As Silicon University now emerges onto the educational landscape, it brings with it a legacy of academic excellence and a promising future. In celebrating Engineers’ Day and the rise of Silicon University, we celebrate the spirit of innovation and progress that will continue to propel our nation forward. For further details, visit
