The Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities (BSH) at SiliconTech, the engineering institute of Silicon University, organized a three-day comprehensive workshop on ‘Aspects of Communication’ from 6-8 August 2024.
The objective of the workshop was to enhance participants’ understanding of effective communication strategies, emphasize the importance of cultural sensitivity in language, and provide practical skills in technical and academic writing.
The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Jaideep Talukdar, Vice-Chancellor of Silicon University. Prof. Jatindra Nayak, Retd. Professor from Utkal University delivered the keynote address on ‘Humor in Communication’. He shared numerous anecdotes to discuss how humor can bridge communication gaps and foster better understanding. This was followed by a session on ‘Logic in Communication’ conducted by Dr. Saroj Kant Misra, Professor and Advisor at Silicon University. Dr. Misra highlighted the role of logical reasoning in crafting persuasive messages. The first day concluded with Prof. Kalyani Samantray, Retd. Professor from Utkal University, conducting a hands-on session on ‘Brevity in Language Use’, where she emphasized the power of concise expression in effective communication.
The second day of the workshop began with a talk on ‘Positive Communication at the Workplace’ delivered by Ms. Shradha Padhi, Chief People Officer at CSM Tech. She explored strategies for maintaining a positive communication environment that promotes collaboration and efficiency. Monk Sangramjit Das, from ISKCON, then presented on ‘Creating an Environment for Effective Communication’, where he shared insights into how mindfulness and spirituality can enhance communication. The day ended with Dr. Tanutrushna Panigrahi, Professor at Utkal University, conducting a practical session on ‘Technical and Academic Writing’, guiding participants on how to structure and present their ideas clearly and effectively.
The final day commenced with Dr. Pranati Das, Retd. Professor from BJB Autonomous College, discussing ‘Personality Development’. She emphasized the role of self-awareness and confidence in effective communication. Following this, Swami Shankarananda Giri Maharaj, President of Kriya Yoga Foundation, delivered a thought-provoking session on ‘The Spirit of Communication’, where he underscored the importance of sincerity and intention in communication. He advocated that the essence of life is breath, and to be particularly conscious of breathing. The workshop concluded with Dr. Amrita Satapathy, Professor at IIT Bhubaneswar, leading a session on ‘Cultural Sensitivity in Language’. She highlighted the significance of understanding cultural contexts to avoid misunderstandings and foster respectful communication.
A total of forty faculty members attended the workshop to gain a deeper understanding of various aspects of communication and learn the necessary skills for effective and mindful interactions in both professional and personal settings.
