The Social Awareness and Gender Equality for Women (SAGE-W) cell at SiliconTech, the engineering institute of Silicon University, organized an awareness program on ‘Health Issues and Understanding Hormones’ on 26 February 2024.
The awareness program was specially organized for female students, considering the complexity of a woman’s hormone-regulated physical health and the need to acknowledge and treat it.
The awareness session was conducted by Dr.Dilleswari Pradhan, Professor of Pathology at Saheed Rendo Majhi Medical College & Hospital (SRMCH) in Bhawanipatna, Odisha. Dr. Pradhan has done her MBBS from Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMSAR) in Burla and MD (Pathology) from Srirama Chandra Bhanj Medical College & Hospital (SCBMCH), Cuttack. She has contributed her knowledge and expertise by working as a lecturer, assistant professor, and associate professor in various medical colleges across Odisha. She also worked as a senior resident at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She has authored and co-authored multiple articles for national and international medical publications on endometriosis diagnosis using nerve fibre identification, histological alterations in tissues, and uterine cancer.
In her talk, Dr. Pradhan discussed the factors that affect our general health and emphasized the role of hormones on our mental and physical health. She explained about hormonal imbalance, the menstrual cycle and the myths around it, the effects of hormones on adolescents, and the physical and emotional health of women. The speaker highlighted the common menstrual issues and discussed the negative consequences of smoking and alcohol consumption on women’s menstrual health. She suggested that the government should take proper initiatives to make people aware about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), and endometriosis. She also shed light on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination awareness, the recommended age for Pap testing, and the test procedures. In her concluding remarks, Dr. Pradhan emphasized the need for spiritual growth to maintain a healthy life.
The talk was followed by an interactive session where the audience discussed their queries with the speaker. A total of sixty nine participants attended the program and benefited from the knowledge and insights of the expert speaker.
