The Indian Gate Ball Union (IGU) collaborated with Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (SiliconTech) to host the Indian Open Gate Ball Tournament (IOGT) 2023 from 26 to 27 November 2023.
Gate ball is a team sport played with a wooden mallet and wooden balls, on a rectangular field between two teams with five players in each team.
The tournament was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr. Satyabrata Sahu, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Odisha on 26 November 2023. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dr. Saroj Kanta Misra, our Director, and Dr. Ramaprasad Panda, Dean (Administration & Student Affairs).
A total of twenty four teams from different countries including Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Thailand participated in this tournament. The doubles game was held on the first day of the tournament, and the team game was held on the second day.
In the doubles game, team Indonesia won the championship trophy and the IGU Odisha team was the runners-up. In the team game, the IGU, Odisha team competed against 18 teams to emerge as the champions and the Asia Pacific Gate Ball Union (APGU) team became the runners-up.
Trophies to the winners and runners-up of the doubles game were awarded by Dr. Ashok Choudhury, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Rotarian Jayashree Mohanty, and Dr. Jaideep Talukdar, our Principal. The winners and runners-up of the team game were felicitated by Mr. Manoranjan Misra, Civil Engineer, Govt. of Odisha, and Dr. Debabrata Kar, Dean (Academics).
All the matches were judged by external referees from the IGU team including Mr. Dwaipayan Pattnaik, President of IGU, Mr. Umakanta Pani, Vice Chairman of IOGT, Mr. Biswaranjan Mishra, IOGT Treasurer and Mr. Gyana Ranjan Biswal, Joint Secretary of IOGT & Sports Coordinator of SiliconTech. The event was coordinated by Dr. Subhakant Dash, Faculty-in-Charge, Silicon Students Council.
